I visited Dr. Shawnie’s office at the recommendation of a friend. He knew I was having trouble with my hip and that I’d been to a chiropractor and was still hurting. I was suffering from sciatic pain in my left leg that ran from my hip to my ankle. It was really affecting my daily activities and my life in general. Dr. Shawnie used several modes of treatment like stretching, manipulation, exercises, and K taping to help me get back to normal. She also listened, encouraged, and coached while she was working with me.

Since I’ve finished the treatments, I am running without pain, and doing everything that I want to do again. I recommend her to anyone who needs help with a physical problem that’s limiting or hindering activity. She not only treats the problem but also does a thorough examination to determine the possible causes of the problem.

Thanks, Dr. Shawnie!

Words cannot express how grateful I am to have a Chiropractor like Dr. Shawnie!

Our family has had many occasions over the years to visit Dr. Shawnie’s office and she always knows just what to do.  From a teenager with whiplash due to a car wreck, pulled back muscles, and sports injuries, Dr. Shawnie can take care of it all!  She not only treats your injuries but she teaches you exercises to help strengthen and condition muscles and teaches about nutrition also.

My most recent visit to Dr. Shawnie was for knee pain.  I  suffered this injury while I was doing a very intense exercise regimen.  I had intense pain, and swelling, and it felt like my knee was bulging on the backside of my knee.  I waited in pain for 4 weeks to see an orthopedic specialist only to be told that x-rays showed no damage. I was told to rest and take ibuprofen and if it wasn’t better in a few months that they would order an MRI.  I, like most people, always think of chiropractors as being specialists for the neck and back so I never thought to see a chiropractor for a knee injury but I was in so much pain I decided to see if Dr. Shawnie knew what was wrong since she is very athletic herself.

She has extensive knowledge of all the muscles in the body.  I am so glad I did because she ‘fixed’ me on the first visit!  It turns out that I had strained a muscle on the back of my knee (the Popliteus). After she adjusted it and applied the Graston Technique to my leg, it was good as new.  Dr. Shawnie knows current methods and techniques for athletic injuries.  She instructed me as she applied Kinesio Tape to my knee.  It was the first time I had ever heard of it but it worked wonders!!  (When a ligament or muscle is injured there is lymphatic fluid that builds up. Kineso tape supports the strained tissues and allows for lymphatic drainage.)  I saw Dr. Shawnie for a week and after three visits my knee was, and still is completely healed.

I am back to working out every day and I tell everyone I know about Dr. Shawnie!!

YOU CAN GET BETTER – If you do the work and drink the Kool-Aide

In the summer of 2012, at age 65, I went to see Dr. Shawnie on the advice and recommendation of a friend.  I was – and am – an avid golfer.  But in 2012 I had two serious issues:  the return of lower back pain, plus a self-inflicted right rotator cuff injury caused from working out too hard at the gym.

After an MRI on my back my orthopedist basically said, “I have good news and bad news.  There’s no sign of another disc rupture (I’d already had two) but there’s not much we can do for the pain.  You’re just going to be a guy who has to live with chronic back pain.  Maybe some physical therapy will help.”   The orthopedist dealing with my shoulder essentially said about the same thing, but also gave me a cortisone shot.

That’s when I reported to Dr. Shawnie.  We started first with the back, the most serious issue.  Like many people I have some certain skepticism about chiropractors.  And I didn’t know much about Shawnie Lamborn.  I didn’t, for example, know that she was a physical fitness maven and an exercise fanatic.  So when she asked me, “How much time can you give me?” I kind of mentally groaned thinking here we go into endless rounds of office visits.  But what she was really asking me was, “Will you do the things I tell you to do?  Will you do the stretches?  Will you do the exercises?”  What she really meant was, “Will you do the work?”  I said I would.  And I did.

She doesn’t pull any punches.  “Your balance is horrible,” she told me in one of our first sessions when it became obvious I could barely stand on one foot.  “We need to work on your core strength.”

So I drank the Kool-Aide and thus began a series of office visits consisting of adjustments and “hurt-so-good” stretches – especially on the hamstrings.  These were combined with a rigorous at home core-body exercise regimen using medicine balls, and gym balls plus a 3X per day stretching program.  It didn’t happen overnight.  But gradually, slowly, over a period of a month or two I got better, and then even better still.  My balance improved to where I can even to “The Stork” exercise (not easy, ask her about it then try it yourself).

Next up, the right shoulder, the one I’d been dealing with for nearly six months.  Shoulders, she told me, were one of her specialties.   I’d been doing lots of typical physical therapy stretch-band exercises plus an occasional cortisone shot – all without much relief to the shoulder.

I saw Dr. Shawnie only once for my shoulder.  She asked all the right questions about how I hurt it and what I’d been doing for recovery.  Then she put the shoulder in have a dozen crazy positions. Finally, she started poking around.  “Does this hurt?” she asked.

“No,” I said.

“How about here?”

“No.”

“What about here?”

“No.”

“OK what about … riiiggghht here?”

“OH MY GOD YES!”

That’s when she asked me if I liked swimming.  Since I did (I swam competitively as a kid), I answered – wondering where this was going – “Yeah I guess I so.”

“Well, you need to hit the pool, buddy,” she told me.  “And concentrate on your freestyle.  The stretch band stuff you’re doing is OK, but it’s not enough.  “How much time can you give me?” she asked again.  “Whatever it takes,” I said once again.

“Go swimming,” she said. “Call me in a month to report in.”

Well, guess what?  The swimming is great exercise and the shoulder is much better, now nearly pain free.  I forgot to call and tell her, though.  But that didn’t matter.  About a month later she called me.

I told her, “It’s all good, the back and the shoulder.  And I’m back playing golf with my buddies and now and then getting into their wallets.  I do my stretches every single day.  And I’m swimming on days when I don’t play golf.”

Dr. Shawnie can help you can get better – if you drink the Kool-Aide.

I am writing this letter regarding my experiences as a patient of Dr. Shawnie.  Over the past 20 years I’ve have presented several running related injuries and have always had a pleasant experience.  I set the goal and develop the preparation, and having Dr. Shawnie be a part of that physical and spiritual journey has allowed me to achieve many of those goals.    As an athlete herself, Dr. Shawnie has always responded to my goals with appreciation, and in every case her treatment plan was effective in allowing me to overcome my injury and continue training.

I have benefitted greatly from her deep understanding of the human body and will always enjoy her thoughtful friendship.
